Varun Hiremath Leads ā€˜Green Change’ Initiative to Inspire Village Children on World Environment Day

On the 5th of June, the event of World Environment Day was held in Alibag, Maharashtra. The Co-Founder of the Hiremath Family Foundation, Varun Hiremath: Founder & CEO of Hiremath Family Foundation, attended this event. At the said event, Varun came up with an initiative for helping the people in rural areas. The initiative was named as the Green Change. It was taken to educate the rural children about the environment. It taught them environmental conservation, waste management, and sustainability.

The theme of the initiative stands as "Our Land, Our Future." This imparts knowledge to the children so that they can address the issues arising from environmental misuse and how to handle them. This will inculcate future leadership skills in them, directing them to create a cleaner, greener future.

The participation of the students almost crossed over 150, consisting of students from government schools in the neighbourhood participated with a great amount of enthusiasm. They learnt about various topics like waste segregation, composting, plastic hazards, and waste minimization, how to construct compost pits, draw posters for environmental awareness, plan local clean-up drives, reduce plastic use, and promote reusable materials.

Varun Hiremath: Founder & CEO of Hiremath Family Foundation believes that an ideal change in the environment will happen if students are educated about the environment from a very young age. By this, they will learn how to manage waste to keep the environment secure and will actually bring a change.

The "Green Change" initiative consisted of three key phases:

  • Eco-Literacy Workshops: In this, they were taught to deal with household and school waste effectively, sort waste, reduce consumption, and adopt sustainable practices.
  • School-Led Action: Under this, they learnt how to lead campaigns in their schools by adopting practices like conducting waste audits, placing bins to throw waste, and organizing clean-up drives. Moreover, there were environmental awareness activities like plays and poster-making contests.
  • Village Integration: In this, the students collaborated with the local panchayats and their families to spread awareness and introduce sustainable waste management solutions in their villages, respectively.

The first phase took place in three villages at Alibag. Then the program has also been planned to extend to six more villages by December 2025. It has got massive support from local teachers and school authorities, as well as community members. This has also led to the adoption of new practices in various households.

The children spread awareness among the villagers by offering them seed balls to sow in local fields or empty plots for greenery. Moreover, they proudly carried banners stating, 'Bhoomi Meri Jimmedari' (My Earth, My Responsibility) during the ā€œGreen Marchā€, which was the most important aspect of the program.

While concluding Varun Hiremath: Founder & CEO of Hiremath Family Foundation stated that planting trees is important, but what’s more important is that the young minds should be trained to hone up their leading skills and these skills would bring a real change in the environment. He also stated that the Green Change is not just a campaign but a significant path allowing youth to take ownership of their environment.
